About Noodle

For all who want to know what kind of person is reviewing these books, here's an introduction to Noodle.

I love reading. The list of books I've read is longer than my leg, and I would say over 75% of those books were good enough to tell other people to read. I would say I'm not a very picky reader - I've been known to pick up a 120 page kid's book off the bookshelf and spend the next half hour reading it. But there are some things I like to see in a book.

For one thing, I'm a big fan of books that have entirely new worlds in them. There's something about being introduced to a whole new world that really intrigues me and makes me want to keep reading. Some of my favorite books are ones set in made-up worlds. Examples would be:
  • the Cat Royal series, by Julia Golding
  • The Ranger's Apprentice, by John Flanagan
  • Fablehaven, by Brandon Mull
I dislike books generally that have all sorts of icky, Victorian-age romance in them. It's so unrealistic, and that's not what I go to books to read about. The Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer is one that I gave a thumb's-down for that reason.

But I'll forgive many faults, although not the romance one, if the characters in the story are believable, are ones I can understand and relate to, and are interesting, new, and unique. And if the plot of the book is something I've never seen before, I'll keep reading to see how things turn out.

More specifically, I like reading fantasies. Books with elves and dragons and magic are sure to at least be read by me. I also like retellings of fairy tales, Greek myths and legends, and stories based on the Arthurian tales of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table.

That's what I like to read. But to be honest, I'll read just about anything - once. Only books that I like do I read again.
